July: What I Read

Some solidly good books in July!  And one terrible stinker.

9.  Little Mercies by Heather Gudenkauf:  This book, gabbed hastily in a supermarket check out lane, was so bad I cannot even link to it in good conscience.  A social worker forgot her baby in a hot car.  Cliches ensued.

8.  Until I Say Good-Bye by  Susan Spencer-Wendel:  Terminally ill mother of small children.  Yikes.  Terrifically beautiful afterword.

7.  The One and Only by Emily Giffin:  I find this author completely insufferable on Facebook.  The only way I could stand to read her new book was to unfollow her page.  This book was a great summer read and way pervier than her usual plot line.  She is veering into Danielle Steele territory.

6.  All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner:  Schlock, but really engaging schlock.  Worth the $2 library rental price for sure.

5.  The Fever by Megan Abbott:  Really engaging YA book-- a thriller, kind of.

4.  We'll Always Have Paris: A Mother/Daughter Memoir by Jennifer Coburn:  This book drags in places, but it made me want to throw Dorothy on a plane and start slapping together those memories.

3.  The Farm by Tom Rob Smith: A dark and creepy pool read-- it was a quick one and I recommend it.

2.  The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1938 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown:  The title really sums up the plot, and still the book is wildly engaging and suspenseful.  Really, really well done and a very enjoyable read.

1.  I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You by Courtney Maum:  An engrossing read about a marriage on the rocks-- funny, and it makes you like a really terrible main character.  A solidly good one!

  1. The Boys in the Boat is on my short list!!!

I have a hard time with Emily Griffin because she can't seem to free herself from the same damn character types all the time. I was not surprised that her fb persona was obnoxiously annoying...
